Trailhead Location:
Turn west on Whitney Portal Road at the traffic signal in the center of Lone Pine. Drive 12 miles to Whitney Portal Campground. The road is usually open from May through early November.

Dates open:
Mid July to early October, depending on the snowpack.

Type of camp:
Backpack 5 miles on a strenuous trail.

Permits:
Forest service wilderness permit. No campfires.

Highest elevation reached:
11,460 feet

Comments:
Purify water, watch for bears and pack out all trash.
